Matrix Multiplication
Problem
Section titled “Problem”You want to multiply two dense matrices C = A * B where A is M x K and B is K x N. The standard O(MKN) algorithm is compute-bound and each row of the result is independent, making it an ideal candidate for parallelization.
Solution

Section titled “Row-Parallel Matrix Multiply with parallelFor”Each row of C can be computed independently. parallelFor distributes rows across workers, and the context struct carries pointers to all three matrices along with their dimensions:

Section titled “How It Works”Row-level parallelism with parallelFor. The outer loop over rows of A (index i) is the parallel dimension. Each worker receives a range [start_row, end_row) and computes all columns of C for those rows. Since each row of C depends only on a row of A and all of B (read-only), there are no data races — workers write to disjoint regions of C.
Context struct carries matrix references. The Matrix struct contains a slice (pointer + length) and dimension metadata. Passing it through the context is lightweight because slices are just 16 bytes (pointer + length). Workers share read access to A and B and have disjoint write access to their rows of C.
Tiling for cache efficiency. The naive ijk loop accesses column j of B in the innermost loop, striding by N elements (N * 8 bytes per stride for f64). This causes cache misses. The tiled version processes 64x64 sub-blocks, keeping the working set small enough for L1 cache. The tile size of 64 uses 64 * 64 * 8 = 32 KB, which fits in most L1 data caches.
Why not parallelize inner loops? The k-loop (dot product) has a data dependency (accumulating into sum) and the j-loop is typically too fine-grained. Row-level parallelism provides the best balance: enough work per task (one full row computation) with no synchronization needed between workers.
Performance

Super-linear speedup at large sizes. The tiled parallel version sometimes exceeds Nx speedup on N cores because each worker’s tile fits in its private L1/L2 cache, while the sequential version thrashes the shared cache. This is a well-known effect in parallel linear algebra.
Scaling limits. For small matrices (under 128 x 128), the parallelization overhead dominates. The default grain size in parallelFor handles this automatically — with only 128 rows, Blitz may run the entire computation on one or two workers rather than splitting across all cores.
For production use. This recipe demonstrates the pattern. For production linear algebra, consider using BLAS bindings which apply additional optimizations like SIMD vectorization, register blocking, and architecture-specific tuning. However, the parallel tiled approach shown here is a solid baseline that achieves 60-70% of peak FLOPS on most hardware.
